The Process of Naturalization

Naturalization is a great honor for many immigrants that have been living in the United States. If the process is not completed according to all rules and regulations, removal or deportation can occur. Working with an immigration attorney in Old Bridge can increase your likelihood of qualifying for citizenship.

The general requirements for naturalization include:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age;
  • You must have been a legal permanent resident (LPR) for at least 5 years, with the exception that LPRs who have been LPRs for 3 years and married to a U.S. citizen for at least 3 years can apply earlier;
  • You must have lived for at least 3 months in the state or USCIS district where you are applying;
  • You must have continuously resided in the United States for at least 5 years (or 3 years if eligible for the early filing exception above) immediately preceding the date of filing;
  • You must be able to read, write and speak basic English;
  • You must have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government (civics);
  • You must have good moral character without certain criminal convictions; and
  • You must demonstrate an attachment to the principles and ideals of the United States constitution.

Are you able to apply for naturalization? You will need to complete Form N-400, undergo a background check and pass an interview with USCIS. When you apply for naturalization, USCIS will review your entire immigration file and any issues that were previously overlooked may affect your naturalization application.

The Smoothest Path to American Citizenship

If your application is approved, you will participate in an oath ceremony and receive a Certificate of Naturalization. If it is denied, you may be able to appeal the decision. The Law Office of Laurie Y. Wu, LLC is your guide throughout the naturalization process. We can review your application, help you gather evidence, and prepare for the interview. We are based in Old Bridge, NJ but serve clients nationwide.
